Auckland’s Convention Centre Project

Auckland’s new convention centre, estimated to be a three-year project, is well under way but still a long time out from completion. Still being excavated, the project is being dubbed “the big dig” as 180,000 cubic metres of dirt needs to be moved in total, with 157,000 cubic metres still to go!

The centre will be impressive once it’s finished, with 1,327 underground carparks, 300 rooms as part of the 5-star hotel, and a whopping 3.2ha of floor area.

Rocket Lab Launch Site Opens

Construction has been completed for Rocket Lab’s orbital launch site, the first private launch site of its kind in the world. With NASA, Planet, Spire and Moon Express already signed on as customers, the site looks to be sending four to five rockets into space each month.

Dunedin Building Boom

Dunedin is currently enjoying a $340 million commercial property boom boosted by the universities large dental school project. On top of the large projects already in the pipeline, the number of building consents being approved has been growing rapidly over the past few years, indicating continued growth in the region’s construction sector.

Hero Truckie Saves a Life

Craig Hine, a Tauranga truck driver, has been lauded as a local hero for stopping in busy traffic to rescue an elderly man whose mobility scooter had got stuck on train tracks moments before a train arrived.

”I’d just done a delivery across the road and saw the old boy got stuck in the railway lines so I thought I’d help him out. I knew he wouldn’t have been able to pick it up himself, he just didn’t have the strength to move it, so I did what you would do for an aged person,” Mr Hine said.
