What's My Rate? Introducing our 2021 Industrial and Trades Wage Report

Over the past few years, we’ve been recording and analysing the biggest trends impacting New Zealand’s industrial and trades sectors in our OneStaff What’s My Rate? Report.  This year is perhaps one of our most important releases yet – our first major glimpse at the fallout of COVID-19 on blue collar workers.

What’s in the Report?

The 2021 OneStaff What’s My Rate? New Zealand Industrial and Trades Wage Report is an expansive outline of key wage, job satisfaction, gender diversity, recruitment, and health and wellbeing trends that will be invaluable for any employer or employee navigating today’s landscape.

For example, we find that the pandemic appears to have contributed to wage stagnation, with a lot of last year’s growth wiped out. This has contributed to a widening of pay disparities between men and women – although not everyone was affected equally, with regions like Northland and Wellington still seeing slight pay increases.

Some of our biggest findings revolve around health and wellbeing. Not only do our findings show that New Zealand has a major overtime culture, but that a full third of Kiwis also don’t know if they would take sick leave if they felt ill, while a further two out of five already know they wouldn’t.

Finally, our report explores many of the trends we saw in previous years and looks to identify which have continued. For instance, we know that seemingly higher qualifications still don’t always lead to higher pay (indeed, industry-specific training is more important), but that high job satisfaction and years of experience do.

Who We Spoke To

Our 2021 report draws on the responses of over 6,000 New Zealanders in the Commercial & Hospitality, Construction & Infrastructure, Engineering, Manufacturing, Production & Logistics, and Trades & Services sectors.

Kiwis responded anonymously to our online survey tool (www.whatsmyrate.co.nz) from all over the country, encompassing every region of New Zealand.
