What You Need to Know: The Minimum Wage Increase

March 27, 2017 0 comments

Last month, it was announced that the minimum wage will rise from $15.25 an hour to $15.75 an hour. The change will take effect on the 1st of April, and applies to all workers 18 years old and over.

Starting-out and training wages, which can be offered to workers aged 16 or 17 who have not completed 6 months of continuous employment with their current employer or 16 to 19 year olds who are required to undertake industry training for at least 40 credits a year, is also increasing. This will be going up from $12.20 per hour to $12.60.

The increase will see minimum wage earners take home $630 before tax for a 40 hour week, around $20 more than previously, which is a $1040 increase annually.

Remember, your employer is not permitted to pay you less than the minimum wage, so if you are on the minimum wage make sure that your pay will be increasing on April 1st.
