What's My Rate? Introducing our Industrial and Trades Wage Report

It’s been a hectic start of the year with a lot of media interest and discussion off the back of our inaugural “What’s My Rate?” Industrial and Trades Wage Report. We undertook this campaign to provide some external transparency around the waged employment market in New Zealand given there was a distinct lack of clear and relevant information available, with only salaried roles considered in the other reviews we found. We felt this missed gathering data on a massive section of the population who work in waged roles across the different types of positions within industrial type businesses.

The hope was to provide both employers and employees with more insight into not only the different rates across roles, industries and regions, but also the motivations and factors associated with job satisfaction. This would allow people to make more informed decisions around their careers and staff engagement. The outcome was the report – which can be downloaded here.

Through this process and reviewing the data received from over 10,000 people, we also uncovered some markers around gender differences in industrial employment. On top of that, we highlighted some key factors that employers can and should be thinking about in relation to skill shortages and what motivates employees to apply or stay with different businesses.

There are some interesting findings associated in the results which we hope you enjoy reviewing. As well as creating a benchmark from which you can compare your circumstances, our intention was to build on this by measuring and monitoring trends on an annual basis. With real information from real people working within the industry in New Zealand, we’ll be able to see where change is happening over time (or perhaps identify areas or reasons where change is required but not happening).

Over the coming weeks, we will be providing more specific insight into the different aspects of the report, just as we engage with businesses all over New Zealand regarding their specific circumstances and how they may relate to the content. Enjoy your reading, and as always if you are interested in some direct feedback in relation to your operations or the content, please do not hesitate to contact your local industrial recruitment specialists at OneStaff for a more detailed discussion.
