What's My Rate? Introducing our 2020 Industrial and Trades Wage Report

After the success of the first OneStaff What’s My Rate? report, our latest survey builds on the trends, changes and challenges revealed by its predecessor to shine a light on what’s happening in the New Zealand industrial and trades sectors.

What’s in the Report?

The 2020 OneStaff What’s My Rate? New Zealand Industrial and Trades Wage Report is an expansive outline of key wage, job satisfaction, gender diversity and recruitment trends that will be invaluable for any employer or employee in NZ’s core industrial and trades sectors.

For example, we reveal that nobody in New Zealand believes their wage is fair, and that Kiwi workers believe they should be paid an average of $4 more per hour. Interestingly, men feel their rate is more unfair than women, despite earning more in almost every role category.

Additionally, while we all accept that a degree of overtime is a part of the job, overtime culture is rife across New Zealand. Over half of all respondents to our survey regularly work one or more hours of overtime a month, with 4% working 40+ hours extra. But is this compensated? 66% said no it’s not – including over half of those working 40+ overtime hours.

We also found numerous insights regarding which qualifications could lead to higher pay, the management traits industrial and trades workers most seek out in their leaders, the highest-paid regions of New Zealand, and – like last year – a complete Wage Index for employers and employees alike to gain an understanding into how their income relates to that of their peers.

Who We Spoke To

Our 2020 report draws on the responses of over 7,800 New Zealanders in the Commercial & Hospitality, Construction & Infrastructure, Engineering, Manufacturing, Production & Logistics, and Trades & Services sectors.

Kiwis responded anonymously to our online survey tool (www.whatsmyrate.co.nz) from all over the country, encompassing each and every region of New Zealand.
